The Curriculum

Jesus said, I have come that you should have life, life in all its fullness. John, 10:10

At Wilbarston CE Primary, in line with our Christian vision and ethos of “life in all its’ fullness”, each child is taught a broad and rich curriculum, which is appropriate to their abilities. We teach the National Curriculum at Foundation Stages, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Pupils are taught in all subjects in mixed age classes. Careful curriculum and provision mapping ensures that all children experience a wide range of experiences appropriate to their age and ability. We aim to ensure that children to leave our school with skills and knowledge that equip them for their next stage of education and ensuring they create happy memories.

We use the White Rose scheme supplemented with activities and investigations appropriate for the needs of the children in the class. This scheme enables us to ensure that the basic skills of calculation and number are embedded early on and covers all aspects of the Maths Curriculum.

Reading and Phonics are taught using Little Wandle - a phonics, reading and writing programme, from Reception onwards and we also use Accelerated Reader programme to ensure that Pupils read a wide range, including classics and contemporary fiction, and non-fiction.

As well as the academic curriculum, pupils take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and have regular enrichment opportunities such as day trips, residentials and visitors in school.  It is our belief that education is not just about the academic, but also making sure each pupil is a caring, well-rounded individual who is ready for their next step in education.

Curriculum

We offer a very well-balanced curriculum that ensures that all targets set by the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum are available to all children.

This education is not only academic, but includes cultural, social, spiritual, physical development, growth and fun. We plan the curriculum carefully to provide a meaningful and worthwhile education that will prepare our children for the experiences and responsibilities of secondary education and later life. Clear procedures are in place to identify and meet children’s needs providing extra support and new challenges where appropriate to help every child fulfil their potential.

A wide range of learning opportunities and activities are offered alongside the statutory curriculum, which complement learning within the classroom.  Our Forest School provides pupils with ample opportunity to develop social interaction and practical skills in an outside learning environment.  We aim to develop pupils’ cultural capital by providing opportunities to engage with the Arts and by sharing a wide range of cultural knowledge in assemblies.

PSHE

 Intent

At Wilbarston , our well-planned PSHE curriculum is designed to equip all of our pupils for the real world and to meet all of our pupils’ needs whilst reflecting our Christian vision statement of “life in all its fullness”. In order for children to experience life in all its fullness they need strong personal and interpersonal skills and an awareness of self and others.

What do we want for our pupils?

  • To develop a confidence in sharing their own thoughts and opinions with others
  • To show tolerance of others’ beliefs and life choices
  • To develop skills and attributes to keep themselves healthy and safe
  • To develop an attitude of a responsible citizen
  • To build positive, respectful relationships with other people

Implementation

Our PSHE curriculum builds on prior learning by following the progressive frameworks outlined in the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work. The scheme of work covers the following strands:

  • Being Me in My World
  • Celebrating Difference
  • Dreams and Goals
  • Healthy Me
  • Relationships
  • Changing Me

This scheme of work has been amended and adapted to ensure that it meets the needs of all of our pupils at Wilbarston. It has been timetabled carefully, so that it links to events such as Anti-Bullying week, World Mental Health day and Internet Safety Week. Time has been taken to ensure that all areas of the curriculum are being covered across both key stages and that they are being taught at an age-appropriate level.

Although regular time-tabled sessions will be a necessity, PSHE must also be taught incidentally and teachers must be flexible and respond to pupils’ needs and current world affairs.  Our School values and Celebration Assemblies which promote our values will also support the teaching of PSHE across the school.

It is also important that PSHE is taught in other areas of the curriculum, not just as a discrete lesson. At Wilbarston Schools we aim to promote and reflect British Values in all that we do. We pride ourselves on a whole school approach to promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural and social development of our pupils.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum will not only be seen in pupils’ work but by looking at the type of people our pupils become. Our pupils will become confident, tolerant, independent and well-rounded individuals who are prepared for life and for their next steps. We want our children to be able to approach a range of real -life situations with confidence and to apply their skills when navigating themselves through modern life.

The impact of PSHE lessons will be measured by:

  • Looking at evidence of pupils’ work
  • Pupil voice
  • Self-assessment
  • Looking at achievements of pupils both in and outside of school
  • Celebration assemblies – how has the children’s behaviour/learning behaviour improved? What have they achieved this year that they have struggled with before?
  • How children apply their PSHE skills in other subjects and situations they are faced with.
  • Links with SMSC and Fundamental British Values

Our Cornerstones Curriculum puts SMSC and Fundamental British Values at the heart of everything our pupils do. Many of our Imaginative Learning Projects promote aspects of SMSC and FBV. For example, in Year 1 children learn about how to listen others and work cooperatively in the ‘School Days’ project. Whilst in Year 6 pupils learn about discrimination and how to challenge in ‘Maafa’ project.

British Values

Our School is very supportive of the ethos of promoting British Values, and preparing our pupils for success in a modern Britain.

A heavy reliance is placed upon broadening horizons for each and every child and this includes developing the core skills of tolerance, respect, teamwork, resilience and building self-esteem. These are all values and qualities that we feel are relevant in order to play a full and meaningful role in society, and are promoted via our extensive house systems that lends themselves to cultural and sporting competition, democratic principles, social mixing, the development of greater pastoral care and enhanced PSHE. British Values are defined as:

democracy

rule of law

individual liberty

mutual respect

tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

These values are taught explicitly through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE), and Religious Education (RE). We also teach the British Values through planning and delivering a broad and balanced curriculum, and the way we run our school (embodying respect, democracy and tolerance of all).

Year group curriculum maps

Please find below our curriculum maps for each year group.  You will find some themes are in 2 year groups – this is because we mix our children in mixed age classes. Staff carefully map out the progression for each subject. Please see the subject overviews for more information.
